I want to enter the Schweppes photographic portrait award this year and this was my first attempt at an environmental portrait. This photo is of my boyfriend's mum who's a knitwear designer. Her studio (which is in an absolute state) seemed the perfect setting for her photo. However, this photo isn't going to be winning any awards, and I'd be grateful on some tips on how to take good portraits. Thanks.
I like your idea here and would love to see more of Faith.
Here are my personal ideas for it - not official portrait rules, but just my thoughts:
I find portraits more engaging if the subject is looking at the camera. Eyes window to the soul and all that jazz. If you have a good rapport with the subject this will work well. Encourage them not to pose.
If you can find an angle you can take this where it isn't through a window I think it will work a lot better. The glass blurs the image and the frame across the middle divides and distracts. I like the idea of framing your picture though.
I've just put a new one up, what do you think? Thanks for your comments they're very helpful. Just abou to have a look at your gallery. Where are you based by the way?
